'Inclusive and Active'
'Inclusive and Active' - A Sport and Physical Activity Action Plan for Disabled People in London (2007 - 2012) is a pan-London plan co-owned and led by The Mayor of London, NHS London and London Sports Forum for Disabled People.
With a vision of "More active disabled Londoners, achieving their full sporting potential", 'Inclusive and Active' aims to change the way that sport and physical activity for disabled people is viewed, to break down perceptions, and to bring forward a world where disabled people can access the sports and physical activity of their choice, at the venues of their choice and at the level of their choice.
'Inclusive and Active' consists of thirty-six focused actions, with measurable targets and identified lead bodies. The end aim is to increase the participation level of disabled Londoners by at least one percent each year in the time leading up to London 2012.
For ‘Inclusive and Active’ to succeed, we need every organisation, agency and club responsible for sport and physical activity in London to make three commitments:
- To include, within their delivery plans and future work programmes, specific 'Inclusive and Active' actions.
- To include disability impact assessments as standard in every review, initiative, programme or project supported or funded by their organisation directly or indirectly related to sport and physical activity.
- To set specific Inclusive and Active targets for their organisation, for the partnerships that they are engaged in and for the organisations that they fund or they contract with. To then measure performance against the targets on at least an annual basis.

A Sport Boost in Enfield with 'Inclusive and Active' Commitment
Enfield is the first north London borough to commit to the regional plan, 'Inclusive and Active', with the overall aim to increase participation in sport and physical activity by disabled people.
By making this commitment, on Thursday 3rd December, International Day of Disabled People, the borough show their support for existing sport initiatives and dedication to increase future inclusive sport and physical activity opportunities.
'Inclusive and Active' is an opportunity to fundamentally change the way that disabled people access sport and physical activity. It seeks to change perceptions about disabled people and to bring forward a world where disabled people can access the sport and physical activity of their choice, at the venue of their choice and at the level of their choice.
Enfield has also set up a disability sports and recreation action group to identify new ways disabled people can get involved in sport and sport sessions targeted at disabled young people take place throughout the year. Through committing to 'Inclusive and Active', Enfield will seek to expand their sporting offer with more inclusive facilities and training opportunities for coaches and instructors to meet the needs of disabled people. The borough will mark the countdown of the London 2012 Paralympic Games by offering a wider range of Paralympic sports activities. It will also support local coaches and work more closely with sports clubs to help them cater for disabled people.
Cllr Jon Kaye, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture, Olympics 2012 and the voluntary sector said "We have pledged to support this plan in every way by offering training to help coaches and instructors meet the needs of disabled people. We already have three disability-focussed sports academies offering swimming, athletics and football with a number of these young people representing England in their sports. We are very proud of the work going on in these centres where staff and the young athletes are training so hard."
The 'Inclusive and Active' action plan is co-owned and led by The Mayor of London, NHS London and London Sports Forum for Disabled People and is delivered by a plethora of London agencies. By making this commitment to 'Inclusive and Active', Enfield joins a strong partnership to build an active and inclusive capital.
Stewart Lucas, Chief Executive of London Sports Forum for Disabled People said "'Inclusive and Active' has been hugely successful in embedding inclusion and increasing participation levels of disabled people in sport and physical activity in London. The continued success of 'Inclusive and Active' relies on the commitment from agencies with strategic and provision responsibilities for sport and physical activity in London and we are delighted that Enfield has made this commitment."
